The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE guideline NG59) reviewed the trials and concluded there isn't enough consistent evidence to recommend TENS as a treatment for low back pain on the NHS. That's not the same as saying it can't help you personally; it means the studies to date have been mixed and often small, so NICE steers NHS spending towards options with a stronger evidence base, chiefly exercise and staying active.

So where does that leave you? With a fair, realistic expectation.
